Quote of the month:
I have been racing for 20 years...I have heard all the negative things about iBike not being a "real" power meter and it only "calculates" power. But guess what, it calculates it very well.
I ran side by side power tests with a a "real" power meter and the avg was off only 4 watts.
That translates to less than 2% difference. Not only that, but I can reproduce those results every time. With money, easy of operation, and features, you guys get the my vote easily.

I'll admit I was both curious and suspicious
when I started testing the iSport during
the winter, but I was quickly won over...The iSport is simple to use, and more importantly, it works.

Today was a new era in iBike experiences. I headed down the "bumpy" road and just watched the power. I would ease up a bit and then apply more power. The Gen III was
dead on with each change.
I'm really looking forward to this riding season. I'm confident that I can recommend the Gen III to my clients without reservation. Thanks for all you work and sleepless nights.

Got up early on the left coast today and did the test today. I am 38 and got back on the cycling bandwagon about one year ago. FTP of 282 and w/kg of 3.14. Score of 4 on the fitness test.
I recently upgraded from a G1 and had done some FTP estimation using collected data and goldencheetah.org. I had thought that my FTP was closer to the 250-260. What a great way to start the day.
To John and the rest of the team, the upgrade was well worth the cost
and I am truly a satisfied customer.

Wow, I need to visit the forum more regularly. I
just read this string after not having really paid much
attention for a month or so. I eagerly downloaded
the 3.08 firmware and hopped on my trainer to become
acquainted.
Guys, this rocks! I love the
new manual interval feature and the ability ot see NP
and IF is awesome, too. I look forward to checking
out the improved cold weather features now. Starting in cold and ending warm is a common feature of
my rides.
I'm really happy I stuck with
my iAero. I'm awfully impressed with Velocomp's
devotion to customer service and constant striving to
improve the product. Kudos and keep up the great
work.

Power meters for the Masses (or I can afford this and still eat)
Powermeters have been one of the most talked about advances in training over the past few years. There are no drift problems associated with HR or environmental changes associated with speed. When I do an interval at 300 watts, its 300 watts.
So why doesn't everyone use a powermeter? The good ones cost between $1500 and $4000 dollars, some require you to build them into a wheel, and they are bicycle electronics so my expectation is 1-2 years before it breaks.
I have been following this one for a few years and I believe they have got it right. The I Sport from
iBike is a $199 power meter
that really works, especially for triathlon.
...It then uses this information along
with your own personally entered data to calculate
watts. How accurate is it? VERY!

I must compliment the folks at Velocomp. Firmware 3.09 is fantastic. I guess I figured that the real time absolute wind screen would be nice to validate what my legs were already telling me, and it is, but it is so much more. I’ve already found this feature to be a valuable tool in a number of situations.
I went out to do some climbing repeats today, and put my heart rate belt on for the first time in quite a while. I start up the hill in Fit Train, push the center button, and start holding the wattage # I was looking for. Ok, I glance down to see how I’m doing compared to my normal time up this climb, and, wait, what’s that number alternating with the chrono? Hmmm, I guess that had better be my heart rate. How slick is that?
After the interval is over, I go to check my time and average power, and how about that, there is AHR as well. I suppose I would have known about this if I read the release notes, but what a nice surprise.
On my iAero, the wind offset is much more temperature stable than it ever has been, and like John, I now largely just push the center button and ride.
Thanks to Velocomp for continuing to improve their products with free upgrades. If potential customers had any idea as to just how much better the current product is compared to Gen I and Gen II, I don’t think many of them would spring for an SRM, Quarq, or Powertap.
Not only is the iBike generating reliable power numbers, it’s got so many useful features that the competition doesn’t have.
It was worth the wait for the current Gen III version.

I've had an iSport for almost a month now, and have really enjoyed seeing my power numbers on my rides. I'm not happy with how low the numbers are, but that's all my fault.
After about two weeks, I ordered a second mount. I got the unit installed, set up my second profile, and was hoping to see some low cdA and crr numbers on my "better" bike. The cdA looked good, but the friction number on my coast downs was a lot higher than on my other bike. Both bikes are set to put me in the same position, and have the same wheels. I was pretty confused until...
While cleaning my "better" bike, I spun the front wheel while holding the axle by hand. And felt the gritty bearing. I removed the cartridge bearings. One turned smoothly, the other felt like roller skating in a gravel pit.
A new pair of bearings later, and my friction numbers for both bikes are nearly identical.
Just...WOW. That kind of sensitivity and accuracy in a $200.00 power meter is just...WOW.

iSport Keeps Impressing
I posted last week how the crr and friction numbers from my iSport diagnosed a bad wheel bearing. This week, the incidental benefits of the iSport get better.
I installed new bearings in my front wheel (AmClassic Sprint 350), installed the wheel and went for a ride. I figured that with new bearings, a new coast-down was in order. My crr had gone from 88 with a bad bearing to only 79 with the new bearings. I pulled off the road, and found that the hub has some play in it. I tightened the end caps, and re-ran the cd for a crr of 66.
Seeing the opportunity for some on-the-fly experimenting, I loosened the hubs far too much, and got a crr of 125! After about 20 more minutes of adjusting and re-testing, I got a crr of 49. And yes, all the coast-downs were done on the same stretch of road, with good, calm CD conditions...
So not only did the iSport alert me to a bad bearing, it helped me perfect the hub adjustment on the road.
Again, I am blown away by the precision and utility of the iSport. Thanks, Velocomp!

As being one of your first customers of the original iBike
and also one of your first wireless customers I have to say the Gen III iBike is really a great work of customer feedback and engineering. I tried the Gen III today. Setup was a matter of seconds and calibration was really easy. What is impressive is the continuous migration path provided by Velocomp.
I was never presented with "dead end" technology and there was always an upgrade path. There aren't any other power measurement vendors out there that can make that claim - I know since I was a previous customer of one of them.
Thanks,

The iBike has helped me tremendously in my training
and racing by providing me with extremely accurate
information on cadence, wattage, heart-rate and a ton of
other useful data. With this I have been able to chart
my progress and develop a training program based on
specific measurable data. The end result?
I have been able to increase my wattage SUBSTANTIALLY
and that means one thing: FASTER. The iBike is an
integral part of my success. I couldn't have done it
without it!

I received the Gen III this week, and am very happy with it.
Took it on some absolutely awful chipseal roads that were rough enough to bruise kidneys and knock fillings out of teeth, but the iAero Gen III numbers were near perfect.

Count me in the pleased so far category as well.
Tracked my workout set with the lap counter (nice!), rode home, changed, went back to work, loaded the ride data and dang if the data (not just the tilt) didn't look good.

ANOTHER HAPPY GEN IIIer!
I was out of town on business and the unit arrived Thursday. Got home Friday, read through the manuals, input the basic data (wt, wheel circ, etc) and downloaded my previous profile to the unit (had a Gen I unit). Did a tilt, wind offset, then hit the road. I was spooked at first because it showed no watts for the first half mile or so. Then watts kicked in and the unit performed flawlessly through 46 miles of gusting high winds. Came home and put the ride in iBike3 and everything is perfect. Not sure if I even WANT to do new CDs, as this thing looks bullet proof.
Congrats to all at Velocomp. All the work paid off.
